Harvest in the Square

Yesterday was the ‘Harvest in the Square’ NYC food fair; it’s an event to raise money for Union Square Park renovations. When we got there we saw these people taking pictures red carpet style with some of the chefs from Top Chef, “Lisa Fernandes”… “Hung,” the winner of Top Chef Season 3 and Ted Allen, a Top Chef judge. I heard that a bit earlier there were some people protesting with pots and pans, I’m just glad I was “fashionably” late, and missed it. I’m not a big fan of crowds. I still freak out when I’m in the middle of a large crowd, but all the variety of food and wine just waiting to be sampled was a good reason to forget about my phobias. There were 43 restaurants to choose from, and my sweet husband decided he wanted to try every single one of them, so he was nonchalantly jumping from one stand to another, and I was walking a bit behind, pretending I didn’t know him, but all the time he would come to me with something that I had to try no matter what. My favorite food was Smoked Kielbasa and Heirloom Tomatoes from “Gramercy Tavern” (Chef Michael Anthony), Mini Lump Crab-Cakes and Wild Mushroom Arancini from “Black Duck” (Chef Hector Tice). I was a bit disappointed with “Olive” (Todd English) The Long Island Duck Comfit Latkes with Black Cherry Sour Cream had a good sound to it, but the taste fell short. His flat breads would be a better option, but I guess it’s not easy to craft fresh flat bread with delicious toppings on a tabletop burner. My husband’s favorite was “Lunetta’s” Fluke Crudo (chef Adam Shepard), and “Tocqueville Restaurant” Chilled Cream Greenmarket Borscht with Smoked Blue Fin Pate (Chef David Coleman). And we both agreed that the Robiola Panna Cotta with Berries from “Union Square Café” (chef Carmen Quagliata) was the best of all.

That’s the only picture I have, somehow I manage to bring my camera without batteries…. maybe the little wine I had at home before the event is to blame.
