Pork Fried Rice

Last Sunday we went to Chinatown for some dim sum. I love to go there sometimes; it’s almost as if you stepped out of the country. I always joke with my husband that we actually have no idea how it feels to live in America. Because Manhattan gives you this feeling that you are in this international city. We actually celebrate when we meet an American here. We always go to the same place for dim sum but last Sunday we where feeling quite adventurous so we followed the crowd and got inside this huge market, with so many people (Asians mostly). The first 5 minutes I was in there, I just wanted to get the hell out, I don’t do well with big crowds, and the Chinese ladies can be quite demanding. They are in “their” element, and they sure let you know that. I was shocked with the amount of different meats and animal parts we saw there. There were frogs, fresh fishes and even alligator legs. It was quite an attraction. The name of the market is ‘Deluxe Food Market’ and it is on 79 Elizabeth St. So with all that inspiration I decided to cook my own version of fried rice. I’ve used minced turkey, and pancetta instead of cubed pork, (I know… what pancetta have to do with Chinese food?) But that’s what I had in hand. And using the minced turkey made it a bit healthier, right?
Pork Fried Rice
Ingredients
- 4 teaspoons peanut oil divided
- 2 large eggs
- 1/4 cup chopped scallions
- 1/2 cup carrots, diced or pre-shredded
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 cups leftover white rice
- 1 cup diced cooked pork
- 1 cup of green beans cut in little slices
- 1 cup of frozen peas
- ½ cup of beans sprouts
- Salt and ground black pepper
Directions
Heat 2 teaspoons of the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add eggs and cook 2 to 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until cooked through and scrambled. Remove eggs from pan and set aside. To the same skillet over medium heat, add remaining 2 teaspoons oil. Add scallions, carrots, garlic, green beans, and sauté 2 minutes. Add rice and pork; cook 1 minute, stirring constantly. Fluff with a fork and season, to taste, with salt and black pepper. Add the peas and beans sprouts. Stir in cooked egg just before serving.

Wow, alligator legs! I hope you bought some! Your pork fried rice looks great, especially given your improvisations with turkey and pancetta. Chinatowns are always fun to wander through, but you’re right that they can get really crowded. Great photos!

Your making me miss home!!! I grew up in NYC and have cravings to go to Chinatown at least twice a month! Soup Dumplings are my fav! If you are ever out partying, go to WoHop on Mott Street… it stays open virtually all night and serves up delish Chinese food in heaping portions that soaks up the drinks!!

Dim sum tops my list of favorite foods. We went to a place in Portland once and were the only non-Asian folk there. Ha, ha! We are told this is a sign that it is good place to go.
Because I was also the only person there using a fork, it was my last time eating Asian food without chopsticks. I mastered them soon after. Love your Fried Rice! Sounds great!
