My Brazilian Version of “Cinco de Mayo”
Filed under Life by Anna at 6:15 PM on May 05 2009

I spent half of the day baking some cookies (recipe will come, stay tuned) around 5 o’clock my better half called asking about my plans to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, I told him I had no plans, and I didn’t feel too sociable to go out. So he was a bit bummed, but we Brazilians are very quickly to improvise specially when party and cocktails are concerned. I love Margaritas but I found myself in a “pickle” situation. I didn’t have any Tequila or Coronas to whip up a Mexican fiesta. So I did this Caipiroska with pomegranate juice and it was lovely. (The pomegranate was to convince myself that it was a ‘good for you’ drink). Usually caipiroskas are made with limes in Brazil, but it was nice with lemons too.
For one glass:
- 1 Lemon
- 1tablespoon sugar
- Pomegranate juice
- Vodka (Preferably ‘Ciroc” Vodka)
- 1 Rock Glass (8 Oz.)
- Ice cubes
- Cocktail shaker
- Slice lemon into ½ Inch wheels
- Cut the lemon wheels into quarters
- Fill ¼ glass with lemon quarters and sugar
- Muddle the lemon and sugar until sugar is dissolved
- Fill glass with ice cubes all the way to the top
- Then fill glass with vodka and leave 1 or 2 fingers for the pomegranate juice. Shake well and serve with a lemon wheel.

In colombia when we have to improvise anything with alcohol………it is not a problem!
In South America, we make excuses to party. Your drink looks delicious!

Thanks Erica, and that’s a blessing and a curse because sometimes things go very sour in Brazil, but some people are too distracted partying to notice. Oh well!! Can’t have everything right?

I could almost dive into that caipiroska…with my mouth wide open. You obviously did a great job of improvising for the occasion! The pomegranate juice sounds like a nice addition. And of course all that vodka doesn’t hurt either!
I’m a bit late with this, unfortunately, but I hope you guys had a great Cinco de Mayo!
